Everton back in action after transfer window struggles

Everton have enjoyed a positive start to the Premier League season but have seen their squad weakened ahead of the visit of Manchester United on Sunday.

The Merseyside club sanctioned exits for Beto and Iliman Ndiaye but were unable to land replacements as a proposed swoop for Folarin Balogun fell through, although Jack Grealish and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have arrived at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

United bounced back from a shock defeat to Hull by beating Ipswich last time out and Sunday’s game will be the first of the season where they are not facing a promoted team.

Goals at both ends a strong option

Everton may have endured a bit of transfer disappointment but that shouldn’t have a major impact on Sunday’s game, as any new arrivals probably wouldn’t have come into the starting side straight away. Grealish could feature as he was on loan at Everton last season, however.

United lost out 2-0 at Hull but then thrashed Ipswich 5-2. The visitors clicked in attack against the Tractor Boys and obviously carry a goal threat, but they have shipped four goals in total against two teams who were playing in the second tier last season so there are obvious vulnerabilities at the back.

Everton have hit seven goals in total across three games so far in all competitions and have scored in 10 of their last 11 competitive games stretching back to last season, so goals at both ends looks likely on Sunday.

Spoils could be shared

Everton claimed a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last time out and can follow that up with another point against United as they bid to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

The Red Devils won both league meetings 1-0 last season but Sunday’s clash should offer more entertainment and a 2-2 stalemate has a chance. United have shipped exactly two goals in both of their games so far so we could be in line for a high-scoring affair in the early Premier League kick off.

Thierno Barry has four goals already for Everton, including a hat-trick against Preston in the EFL Cup, and he can add to his haul against United. Barry drew a blank against Bournemouth but still had a few chances, with two shots on target, and he can get back among the goals this weekend.
