Honduras suffered an unexpected defeat on Friday as they opened the final round of their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 loss at home to Panama. This instantly puts them on the back foot in what is likely to be a very difficult road to Russia, and they need to get back to winning ways quickly.

Prior to this they were in relatively good form having won four of their previous five matches and lost none, including an excellent draw at Mexico. It also ended a five match winning streak on home turf.

Trinidad and Tobago’s 2-0 loss at home to Costa Rica on Friday was a more expected outcome, with the visiting Costa Rica being one of the teams likely to take one of the three qualification spots on offer in this group.

It is a worrying time for Trinidad and Tobago though. They have lost six of their last eight games and won just one, and away from home they have lost five on the bounce in all competitions.

The visitors have failed to score in three of these matches as well and are facing a Honduras side who have kept four clean sheets in their last six matches on home soil.

20 year old Monterrey striker Alberth Elis is the player Trinidad and Tobago need to watch out for. The youngster has scored in three in his 14 international appearances so far, making him by far the most efficient attacker than Honduras have to choose from. The visitors have conceded 17 goals in their last five on the road as well, so the striker should get plenty of opportunities to add to his tally. I’d seriously consider backing him to score anytime.

It’s quite clear, despite their poor showing against Panama, that Honduras have the upper hand in this one. I fully expect them to bounce back and get the win, especially because they know they could quickly end up out of the running for qualification if they fail to do so.
