Fener to fight through personnel problems

Fenerbahce’s fabulous away record is in danger of being derailed by injuries and suspensions in the run-in, but they should still have enough to defeat an out-of-sorts Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday.

The Yellow Canaries ensured the gap to leaders Galatasaray remained at six points over the weekend when they beat 14th-placed Ankaragucu 2-1 at home. Jorge Jesus’ side lost midfielder Miha Zajc to an injury and left-back Bright Osayi-Samuel to suspension for this game, while there are doubts regarding a couple of other key players – young sensation Arda Guler and striker Michy Batshuayi.

With Enner Valencia still firing in the goals up front, they will carry a significant goal threat when they take on Emre Belozoglu’s inconsistent Grey Owls.

Belozoglu’s boys are woefully inconsistent

Istanbul Basaksehir were beaten by relegation-threatened Istanbulspor last weekend and remain in fifth place, 15 points behind second-placed Fener. They looked one-dimensional and predictable in attack and vulnerable to the hosts’ sporadic counter-attacks.

They cannot be relied upon to get a goal here, based on that display, but they somehow scored three to beat leaders Galatasaray in the cup earlier this month, so Fenerbahce will be wary. The visitors’ away defensive record is not actually that tight for a side that have won six of their last seven on the road because they conceded in each game.

Hence, the play here is to back Fenerbahce to win with at least two goals in the game as they currently average almost 2.5 goals a game in the league and just over two per game away from home.
