      Lyon vs RB Leipzig Predictions

      • A point is all RB Leipzig need to book safe passage into the next stage of the competition.
      • Lyon’s only clean sheet in Group G came in the reverse of this fixture. They won by two goals to nil.

      Lyon look for repeat success

In what is a tight group, Lyon are in a reasonable position as far as qualifying for the knockout stages goes. The French side find themselves with seven points after five matches, which isn’t the best sounding total. But they’re level on points with Zenit and know a win against Leipzig, who they beat in Germany, would guarantee them a place in the last 16.

Like everyone else in this group, Lyon have been a bit up and down. They’ve won two, lost two and drawn one of their five matches, scoring seven and conceding six in the process. Fortunately, their best efforts have come at Groupama Stadium, where they remain unbeaten, having got the better of Benfica and drawn with Zenit.

Not only have Lyon performed reasonably well in front of their own fans, they recorded a pleasing win in the reverse of this fixture. Their 2-0 win in Germany will fill Rudi Garcia’s men with confidence ahead of Tuesday’s decisive clash.

Visitors search for just a point

Leipzig did lose to Lyon when the pair first met, but they’re still the team in the best position. In general, in an up-and-down group, Leipzig have been the best and most consistent, so it’s fitting they come into this final fixture on top. A point would guarantee qualification, while even defeat may suffice.

Barring their loss to Lyon, Leipzig have been very useful in Group G, winning three, drawing one, scoring multiple goals in four out of five. They look a strong outfit, especially in the final third.

However, in keeping with the group, they too have been a bit weak at the back. Without leaking goals to the extent that some of their rivals have, Leipzig have managed just one clean sheet.

Goals galore not on the cards?

Given the nature of this group, it would be easy to assume this will be a goal-filled game. The early market certainly feels there’ll be no shortage of goals at Groupama Stadium on Tuesday evening, but it might just pay to take the opposing view. Leipzig know a draw is all they need, so they may just take a cautious approach.

It seems even more likely the visitors will avoid being too cavalier after an attacking approach got them caught out in the reverse fixture. What’s more, three of Lyon’s five games in Group G have seen less than three goals go in, as did Leipzig’s most recent travelling Champions League fixture.

‘Correct Score’ punters can try a 1-1 draw. After all, Lyon have only failed to score once in this group, as have Leipzig. Add in the circumstances and the fact Lyon have conceded exactly one in each of their home games and a low-scoring draw stands out as a reasonable option.
