Malaga vs Elche Predictions

It’s been an excellent campaign for Malaga, who’re looking to return to La Liga. They’ve missed out on automatic promotion, but are guaranteed a place in the play-offs, which given their current form, is a route that they’re probably happy to take. After winning each of their last four, Saturday’s hosts will be hoping to continue building momentum ahead of the fist play-off showdown.

The best way to describe Malaga’s exploits this season would be solid. They’ve not been the most flamboyant, they’ve not scored the most goals, but they’ve been tough to beat, both at home and on the road, and have steadily accumulated points.

Malaga did go through a period where they found wins hard to come by at home, winning none of their home games between February and late April, though they’ve since recovered well. They recently beat play-off chasers Oviedo by three goals to nil, while they once again notched three goals on route to victory over Zaragoza when last in action at this venue.

While Malaga, who have Segunda’s eighth-best home record, have been useful on their own patch, Elche haven’t tended to be at their best on the road. Saturday’s visitors come into this match having won just three of their 20 away games, while they’ve also conceded a rather dismal 35 goals, which gives them the third-worst travelling defensive record.

Defending has been a big problem for Elche. In recent away games, they’ve got competitive going forward, scoring six in their last two, but they’ve let themselves down big time at the back, conceding eight during that time. A lack of defensive solidity is why Elche have won just one of their last ten on the road.

Elche have nothing left to play for, which hasn’t exactly helped them defensively of late, though it has allowed them to play with freedom going forward, which is why they’ve scored in each of their last five on the road, notching a pleasing total of nine goals.

In the betting, when we consider how Elche’s recent away games have panned out, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ makes plenty of appeal. The visitors have certainly improved going forward of late, as they’ve posted expected goals for figures of 1.73 and 2.04 in their last two on the road, though their defensive antics have remained poor. Against a Malaga side that has thrived offensively at home of late, backing the goals to arrive in no small number is advised.
