Maritimo vs Sporting Lisbon Predictions

  • Sporting have won seven of their last ten away league games, five of which involved fewer than four goals.
  • Eight of the last ten Maritimo home league games have featured fewer than four goals.
  • The last four league meetings between the two clubs have featured fewer than four goals.

Sporting have squad strength to navigate past Maritimo

Sporting’s squad depth should keep them on the winning track when they visit Madeira for Saturday’s clash with Maritimo. Ruben Amorim is without a couple of key creative players for the game after Spanish star Pablo Sarabia was sent off in his side’s 3-0 home win over Estoril last weekend a week after Brazilian winger Bruno Tabata picked up a ban in the aftermath of the Porto trouble.

January recruit Marcus Edwards is champing at the bit for extended playing time and could be pitted against whoever Maritimo coach Vasco Seabra chooses to replace suspended right-back Cláudio Winck. The Brazilian has been an undisputed starter all season and clocked up the most minutes of any of the Verde-Rubros’ squad.

Seabra can at least count on left-back Vítor Costa and forward Henrique, who both return after serving bans in last weekend’s 1-0 home defeat to Famalicao. That was only the third loss of Seabra’s impactful 13-game reign in which he has hauled Maritimo up from second-bottom to eighth place.

Hosts have lost their scoring touch

A 7-1 trouncing by Benfica at the Luz has been long forgotten and his team were highly competitive in a 2-1 defeat at Porto’s Dragao Stadium where they had chances to level the scores. They aren’t always efficient in their finishing, which is partly why we believe Sporting will win with fewer than four goals in the game.

Maritimo have scored just two goals in their last three home matches against vastly inferior opponents than the Lisbon giants. Sporting have conceded in four of their last six aways, so all is not perfect there either, but Amorim is sure to double down on his side’s defensive focus ion the absence of Sarabia.

A 2-0 away win is forecast here because Sporting have been a winning machine away from home this season, averaging 2.18 goals per game.
