Rangers To Win To Nil

Reason for tip

Rangers have quickly adapted to Russell Martin’s possession-heavy approach, including having 75% of the ball against Panathinaikos. That should frustrate a Motherwell side that had the second-lowest xG created last season, so an away win to nil appeals.

Rangers 2-0

Reason for tip

Motherwell lost three of their four home clashes with the top three last term, while they struggled to generate chances across the campaign. With Rangers expected to boss possession, a routine 2-0 away win appeals.

Motherwell vs Rangers Predictions

  • Rangers conceded only 1.08 goals per game last season despite their struggles
  • Motherwell had the second-lowest xG generated last season
  • The Gers dominated possession in both legs of their recent Champions League tie

Martin making his mark

These two clubs open their Premiership campaigns under new management, with hopes that can transform their fortunes. Dane Jens Berthel Askou has been tasked with improving Motherwell’s fortunes, while Russell Martin’s appointment at Rangers raised eyebrows.

Martin’s dismal campaign with Southampton has Gers’ supporters concerned, but his approach was in line with Vincent Kompany’s before the Belgian was snapped up by Bayern Munich.

Martin’s side are already looking comfortable in possession, seeing the majority of the ball in both legs against Panathinaikos. They kept their lead in Greece with that metronomic style, while they had 75% of the ball at Ibrox in the first leg.

While Askou is planning his own overhaul at Fir Park, he has limited resources to work with. The club ranked second-last in terms of Expected Goals created last term, so it’s hard to see them making the most of limited bouts of possession.

Rangers conceded narrowly over a goal per game in a nightmare campaign last term. They’ve got the defensive stability to improve on that front, while they’re looking comfortable on the ball so far. That should frustrate the hosts, which points to an away win to nil to start their league campaign.
