Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in four of the Netherlands’ last five friendly games. Meanwhile, both teams have also scored in four of Scotland’s last five matches and six of their last seven friendly internationals – including a 2-2 draw with the Dutch three years ago.

Netherlands 2-1

Reason for tip

The Netherlands have won four and drawn one of their last five matches against Scotland, scoring 13 goals across those games. They have enough depth to get the job done and win even if key players are rested. Scotland have conceded two or more goals in four of their last five away friendlies, but scored in all five – albeit no more than once on three occasions.

Dutch may have one eye on Frankfurt clash

Friday’s international friendly in Amsterdam looks like being a bigger occasion for Scotland than the Netherlands.

Scotland’s three other pre-Euro 2024 tests are against Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and Finland, so this offers Steve Clarke’s men the best opportunity to see where how they match up to one of this summer’s fancied nations.

The Dutch take on bitter rivals Germany in Frankfurt a few days after this clash, so there is a good chance Ronald Koeman fields a second-string XI at Johan Cruijff Arena, albeit one with enough quality to extend their three-game winning run.

Both teams can score in Amsterdam

Although they lost 2-1 to France in Amsterdam last September, anything other than Dutch wins at the stadium are rare with Oranje winning nine of their last 11 internationals there. They can be trusted to come out in top in a battle with a Scotland side that has won only one of their last 11 friendly games – against Luxembourg.

The game could be quite open in nature with nothing on the line and both coaches looking to experiment ahead of the serious stuff in the summer.  That could mean there are a few chances for both sides to get among the goals and Scotland’s recent pattern of matches suggests both teams will be on the mark.

Koeman’s side kept clean sheets in five of their qualifiers, including each of their last three, but there is a possibility defensive colossus Virgil van Dijk will not play or not get 90 minutes. That brings both teams to score into the equation and, with Scotland having scored in their last five away friendlies – including France in October – makes it the the most attractive play on Friday.
