Blues must exorcise playoff ghosts to make capital gains
Paris, perhaps scarred by last season’s play-off loss to Grenoble, will need to rediscover their early-season form if they are to get past Sochaux in Tuesday’s promotion eliminator.
Thierry Laurey’s team went off the boil in the past couple of months, losing a grip of second place and the automatic promotion berth that went with it. Now the ghosts of last season’s end-of-season failure look set to haunt the capital club again as they take on Sochaux for the right to meet Auxerre.
The Blues did get an important final-day win over Grenbole to ensure that they host this one-off clash with Sochaux, but prior to that they had failed to win six of their last nine league contests, including three of their last four at home. They look potentially vulnerable to a Sochaux side that tried to put pressure on them by going 2-0 up against Dijon, only to lose the initiative when they knew Paris were taking care of business.
Paris disrupted by defensive injuries
The Lion Cubs have won six of their last nine Ligue 2 matches, losing only once during the run-in and Omar Daf’s side are far less troubled by injuries than their hosts ahead of this crucial trip to the capital.
The Parisian treatment room is full to bursting with attacking duo Mamadou Gueye and Lamine Diaby-Fadiga plus defender Youssoupha Ndiaye having been out for some time. Regulars Ousmane Kanté and Axel Bamba are also missing from a weakened defense that must now cope without 34-game starter Ousmane Camara, who was injured on Saturday. Several other back-up players are doubts for this meeting, which could render Laurey’s selection plans something of a nightmare this week.
The value here is with the visitors in the draw no bet market and, although these promotion playoff games in France can be very edgy, low-scoring affairs, the disruption in Paris’ defence is enough to persuade us to take Sochaux to win 2-1 in correct score betting, noting also that five of the last seven meetings between the clubs have seen both teams score.
