      Portsmouth vs Derby Predictions

Portsmouth got their League Cup campaign off to a flying start on Saturday, beating Dagenham and Redbridge 3-0 on home turf thanks to 3 second half goals.

This promising start to the league campaign, plus the exodus of unneeded players at the end of last season, will be giving the dismally unfortunate Pompey supporters some cause for optimism.

No less than 11 players left the club at the end of last season’s dreadful performance, with newly appointed manager Paul Cook looking to get Portsmouth on the road to recovery.

Their 3-0 win on Saturday certainly promises more than their 16th place finish in League Two last season, and their numerous loan signings indicate that they are looking for a much more comfortable league campaign in the coming season.

A successful cup run would boost the Portsmouth fans’ hopes even higher, and starting out by beating a Championship side in the 1st round would put the Fratton Park faithful into dreamland following an awful few years.

But Derby County are unlikely to lie down and let Portsmouth win, and they have a strong squad to make a run for the League Cup this season.

Their goalless draw against Bolton on Saturday was a bit of a drab and disappointing way to start the season, especially considering the wealth of attacking players that have been brought in this summer.

Darren Bent, Tom Ince, and Andreas Weimann have all been brought in to strengthen the attacking options in the team, but they were still unable to break through the Bolton defence.

However, defensive signings Chris Baird, Scott Carson, Alex Pearson, and Jason Shackell will be pleased with the clean sheet away from home.

These new signings put out a clear message about Derby County’s goals for the season: They want to push for promotion, and players like Darren Bent, Chris Baird, Tom Ince, and Andreas Weimann bring an excellent mixture of experience and talent into the side.

I think Derby County’s squad is just too strong for the likes of Portsmouth, who are still trying to rebuild their squad after the massive turnaround of players in the summer. I think odds of 5/6 for a Derby County Win are good value.
