One for the purists at Fratton Park

It is fair to say that Portsmouth have struggled to cope with the step up since winning promotion last season but there have been a few signs of life recently and they face a game against a key rival in Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.

Pompey are propping up the table and the Owls sit seven spots above them, but only four points separates these two sides.

The hosts went down 2-0 at Cardiff last time out, a disappointing result after claiming a first win of the season at QPR last weekend, while Wednesday were held to a 0-0 draw by Swansea in South Yorkshire.

Goals have been an issue for both sides and under 2.5 goals looks a good starting point for the main bet.

Both teams are averaging exactly one goal per-game, but Pompey have been better in that regard on their travels as they have scored just twice at home across five games. In contrast, Wednesday are more effective at home as just three of their strikes have come in their five away assignments.

The hosts have conceded plenty of goals – 23 in 11 games – but at home they have been far sturdier and of the seven goals they have shipped in front of their own fans six have come in two games against teams currently inside the top five, which suggests they may be able to keep Wednesday at bay.

Portsmouth are still waiting for their first home win but they have drawn three of their games at Fratton Park. Two of those stalemates have been 0-0 draws and the Owls’ solitary away draw has been goalless, so a Friday night bore draw is the correct score prediction here.
