Tip Reasoning

  • Portsmouth are unbeaten in seven League One games, while Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten in nine.
  • Wednesday’s unbeaten run has included six draws, but also seen them earn results against three of the division’s top six.
  • Darren Moore’s team have not lost away from home since early September, at fourth-placed Plymouth.

Tight Match Anticipated Between Playoff Contenders

Both Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday will view their rightful place in the pyramid as being higher than the third tier. With the two teams sitting, respectively, in ninth and eighth, both within a win of the playoffs and enjoying long unbeaten runs, Tuesday’s clash at Fratton Park could go a long way to deciding which of these former Premier League clubs gatecrashes the promotion battle.

Portsmouth are unbeaten in seven in the league after a stuttering start, but were dumped out of the FA Cup by fourth-tier Harrogate on Saturday, despite making minimal changes from their regular side. Although Pompey have won five of nine at home this campaign, four of those wins came against opponents 14th or lower in the table.

Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten in nine, though they have drawn six of those. However, they have bested sixth-placed MK Dons and fifth-placed Sunderland during that run, as well as earning a creditable draw with third-placed Wycombe. After being dumped out of the cup in the first round, Moore’s team should be well-rested after a weekend off.

Wednesday are Strong Travellers

Wednesday’s away games have tended to be tight this season, they’ve scored 13 and conceded 13 in 10 away trips, but have not lost on their travels since a defeat at Plymouth on 11th September. Rotherham and Ipswich count amongst their most impressive away scalps, and with Owls well-rested and travelling strongly, I’m cautiously backing them to gain another impressive away result, on the draw no bet market.

In terms of a correct score prediction, a 2-1 away win could be a solid punt, for what will likely be a tense and competitive game.
