Expect goals as Hammers head to Austria

West Ham head to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday knowing a win would see them top the group with a game to spare, and they can make the most of that opportunity by taking all three points in Austria.

The Hammers have 10 points from four games so far and are the odds-on favourites to win this clash. Rapid sit at the bottom of the group with just three points, but are not out of contention just yet and could still reach the knockout stages but they would almost certainly need to win both games, and hope other results go their way too.

While I am expecting an away win here, I’m going to go for both teams to score as the main bet as it offers slightly better value and Rapid have been in good scoring form lately. The Vienna club have scored in each of their last nine games since a 2-0 loss at West Ham in the reverse fixture and both teams have scored in seven of those fixtures.

Both teams have scored in three of West Ham’s last four games and they have managed just one clean sheet in their last five away fixtures. The Premier League club also conceded twice in their last European trip, a 2-2 draw at Genk, and are likely to make a few changes for this game as they have a huge test against Manchester City to come at the weekend.

Even if West Ham do opt to rotate they should still have the quality to claim the win they need to finish as group winners, and a 2-1 win for the visitors is the correct score selection as Rapid have only conceded more than twice in one of their 14 home games this term.
