Visitors from Vitoria could frustrate Pellegrini’s side again

Alaves may fancy their chances of another upset when they travel to Seville for Friday’s La Liga clash with Real Betis. Eduardo Coudet’s men stunned Betis 3-1 at the Benito Villamarín back in January and have shown signs of early-season resilience, kicking off their campaign with a 2-1 win over Levante.

Betis, meanwhile, are still searching for rhythm. Manuel Pellegrini’s side drew 1-1 with Elche in their opener and have now gone seven competitive games without a win in all competitions.

Defensive frailties remain a concern, with 12 goals conceded in their last five matches, and it was interesting to hear Alaves midfielder Pablo Ibanez state this week that the side were very confident of scoring on Friday.

Basque side are in great shape

Betis were the better side at Elche, but have surrendered some of their home advantage for this clash, which will be played at Sevilla’s La Cartuja while the Benito Villamarin is under development for two years.

Alaves deserved to beat Levante too, albeit their winning goal came in stoppage time. The Basque outfit are a very fit side after a hard pre-season and can take at least a point form this trip south.

Betis will look to Aitor Ruibal and Giovanni Lo Celso for attacking spark, but they’ve struggled to break down well-organised sides. And with Alaves conceding just two goals in their final four away trips of last season, another low-scoring affair could be on the cards.
