Real Madrid to Win and Under 3.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Real Madrid have won four of their last five La Liga away games, each win featuring fewer than four goals. This will be Real Oviedo’s biggest test in years and they looked short on quality in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Villarreal.

10/11odds when tipped

Real Madrid 2-0

Reason for tip

Real Oviedo failed to score on their La Liga return against Villarreal, losing 2-0. They go up against a Real Madrid side that won three of their last four La Liga matches last term without conceding. Los Blancos averaged just under two goals per game across their last five away league trips, so a 2-0 win could be on the cards.

Oviedo will try to contain the inevitable

Real Madrid travel to the Estadio Carlos Tartiere on Sunday evening to face newly promoted Real Oviedo, who are still adjusting to life back in the top flight after a 24-year absence. Xabi Alonso’s side edged past Osasuna 1-0 in their opener thanks to a coolly taken penalty from Kylian Mbappe, but the performance was far from vintage.

Oviedo, meanwhile, were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Villarreal last weekend, despite a missed penalty from Salomon Rondon. The Asturians were reduced to ten men before half-time and struggled to cope with the Yellow Submarines’ movement and intensity. Head coach Veljko Paunovic will be desperate to avoid a repeat against a side with far greater firepower.

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla is expected to start after being an unused substitute last week, and his experience will be vital in trying to slow the tempo and frustrate Los Blancos’ rhythm.

More Mbappe magic may be required

Their best hope may lie in keeping things compact and hoping for a moment of magic from Ilyas Chaira or Rondon, though the Venezuelan veteran looked isolated and off the pace in the opener.

Madrid’s away form at the back end of last season was pretty good, but this will be their first away league trip under Alonso. But Mbappe appears to have picked up where he left off last term, when he scored 10 times in Madrid’s final five La Liga games, so he can probably relied upon to bring his usual goal menace.

Back the visitors to win with fewer than four goals in the game, which offers similar value to a win-to-nil but with slightly less risk. Oviedo’s lack of attacking threat and Madrid’s controlled tempo suggest a professional, if unspectacular, away win.
