Rennes vs Amiens Predictions

  • Rennes closed out 2019 in fine fashion with seven wins in their last eight games.
  • Amiens have been almost the complete opposite with just the one victory in their final seven matches of the decade.
  • Rennes have a tremendous home record with maximum points picked up from their last six matches.
  • The hosts have kept just two clean sheets in their twelve home matches this season and three of the last four clashes between these teams have been separated by a single goal.

Rennes hoping to take form into the new decade

Julien Stéphan’s Rennes side were on quite the run as they closed out 2019 and these good vibes will be what they’ll be aiming to take into the new decade. The young manager has had his critics throughout his tenure as coach but there were very few doubters of the Frenchman as his team ended the year with six wins in their last seven games.

Some of these victories came against extremely lofty opponents like Lyon (1-0), Lazio (2-0) and Saint-Étienne (2-1) but their one defeat was against their opponents for this one, Amiens (2-3). It was a narrow loss but one that Rennes will be itching to set straight as they host the Unicorns. In that defeat Rennes were the away side but they’ll be back at Roazhon Park for this one, a stadium where they’ve won each of their last six games with 13 goals scored in the process.

Amiens hoping to start with a clean slate

There’s not much Amiens wouldn’t do for Rennes’ form at the moment. Their victory over the Brittany club is their only win in their last seven games and it’s starting to get fraught for manager Luka Elsner. The Unicorns have scored eight times in this run so their attack isn’t really the issue here, it’s their leaky defence which is holding them back.

The backline has conceded a whopping 21 goals in its last seven games and this could worsen as they face a Rennes side well in form. The back four also won’t be helped with this game being played in the north-west of France. Amiens have won just one of their ten away games this season with the three points coming against current 17th placed side Metz. They’ve lost each of their last four on the road and will need to be on top of their game if they want to get a victory here.

A strong start for Rennes?

Rennes are playing with the wind in their sails at the moment with the tremendous performances at the tail end of 2019 carrying them up to 3rd in the league. Despite losing to Amiens a few weeks ago, it should be a different story with this one back at Roazhon Park and as a result we’re backing the hosts to get the victory.

We don’t think it’ll be plain sailing for Rennes though as both teams have scored in three of the last four clashes between these teams and with just two clean sheets in their twelve home matches the season, we can see Amiens getting on the scoresheet. Nevertheless, with their fantastic form and home record, we expect Stéphan’s men to get the win and progress to the next round with a 2-1 victory as three of the last four renditions of this fixture have been split by just the one goal.
