Reason For Lille vs Rennes Predictions

  • Lille kept nine clean sheets in 15 home matches last season.
  • Lille lost just two of their 15 home games last term.
  • Rennes lost 1-0 at Lille when the sides last met in February
  • Rennes won just four of their last 12 Ligue 1 away games.

Lille hoping for fast start against top four rivals

Lille were one of many Ligue 1 clubs left feeling incredibly hard done by when the French Football Association cancelled the 2019/20 season in March – a decision that ended Les Dogues’ dreams of qualifying for the Champions League.

Christophe Galtier’s side, who finished 4th, were just one-point shy of Rennes in third spot after 28 games, though the FFF’s move to call a halt to proceedings due to the escalating health-crisis put paid to their UCL hopes.

On Saturday, Lille have the chance to lay down an early marker against the team that beat them to the punch last season, and having beaten Rennes as recently as February, another home win looks possible.

Lille will have to launch their latest Ligue 1 assault without the services of last season’s leading scorer Victor Osimhen however, after the Nigerian moved to Napoli in Italy, though there is hope that new acquisition Jonathan David, who arrived from Gent, can replace some of Osimhen’s 18 goals.

Rennes looking to build on last season

Following their sensational run to a third spot finish last term, Rennes have a platform to build on and Champions League football to look forward to this season, and Julien Stéphan’s young team have the talent to make waves again this term.

Les Rennais have so far managed to keep their rapidly developing group together this summer, including in-demand 17-year-old midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, though departures before the transfer window shuts are still possible.

In terms of incomings, Martin Terrier and Nayef Aguerd who arrived from Lyon and Dijon respectively should prove useful additions, though Rennes still haven’t managed to add more firepower to a frontline that averaged just 1.3 goals per game last term.

Lille to start with a win

Lille were one of Ligue 1’s strongest home teams last season, as evidenced by their record of losing just twice in 15 assignments at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

The division’s top two, PSG and Marseille, were the only clubs to leave the Hauts-de-France region with maximum points in 2019/20, and Lille won all but four of their games there overall.

Remarkably, Lille conceded just nine goals in total in their Ligue 1 matches on home soil in 2019/20, keeping nine clean sheets in 15 attempts during a campaign heavily dusted with fine defensive displays.

We think Lille can lean on their strength at the back again in Saturday’s season opener, and Les Dogues are worth backing to claim three points at the prices quoted, while a 1-0 finish looks a viable correct score prediction.

Lille beat Rennes by that scoreline when the teams last faced off in February – in fact, four of Lille’s last six home victories were secured with the same score.

Rennes failed to register in two of their final three away matches of the previous campaign, and having done little to improve their attacking options in pre-season, we expect them to struggle again at the business end of the pitch at Lille.
