Salernitana vs Venezia Predictions

• Although they beat Venezia in October, Salernitana have gone nine without winning in all competitions.

Salernitana survive, but only for now

Rock-bottom Salernitana were almost expelled from Serie A over a breach of ownership rules at the turn of the year, but their stay of execution is almost certain to be short. They have gone nine games without winning, losing eight and scoring just one goal.

Stefano Colantuono’s team are now eight points from safety, having scored just 11 goals in 18 league games. Their last league victory, a 2-1 away win in October, actually came at Thursday’s opponents Venezia, who have gone six league games without a win themselves.

Yet while Salernitana have gone five games without even scoring, conceding four and five to Fiorentina and Inter respectively, Venezia’s recent run has at least included some promising performances. Paolo Zanetti’s team held Juventus to a draw last month, were competitive against Lazio, matching them for expected goals, and somehow conspired to throw away a 3-0 lead to lose to Verona.

Visitors to avenge earlier loss

Salernitana’s woeful attacking record is easily the weakest in Serie A, and they have also created the league’s lowest expected goals tally. The hosts can also boast the league’s worst home record, earning four points from a possible 27, conceding 21 goals, and their woes may well be multiplied on Thursday.

Backing Venezia to win a game featuring under 2.5 goals looks a decent punt here; Venezia’s defensive record on their travels is equal to those of mid-table Bologna and Sassuolo, and better than those of even Lazio and Verona. A 1-0 away win looks a strong correct score prediction.
