Reggina need attacking improvements under Inzaghi

Sampdoria escaped relegation from Serie A by picking up seven points from their final five games under Marco Giampaolo last term, and look set to begin the 2022-23 campaign strongly with a cup win over impotent second-tier outfit Reggina, with visiting coach Filippo Inzaghi looking unlikely to start with a win in his new job.

Indeed, the visitors’ record of just 31 goals in 38 Serie B games last term was worse than all bar rock-bottom Pordenone, who only won three matches all campaign. Inzaghi thus has some work to do if Reggina are to challenge for a return to the top flight, after they scored just twice in their final six games of 2021-22, winning none of those encounters.

Sampdoria, meanwhile, had a defensive record worse than all but six Serie A sides last term (conceding 63 goals), although six of their final nine games of last season saw under 2.5 goals scored as they began to tighten things up. A pre-season draw at Besiktas and a 2-0 win over Brescia, who hit five goals without reply against Reggina last term, should tee up a routine evening.

Samp set for comfortable progress

With Inzaghi requiring time to fix Reggina’s ailing attack ahead of their Serie B campaign, backing Sampdoria to win to nil on Friday looks a strong play after they enjoyed a decent first pre-season under Giampaolo.

Meanwhile, a 2-0 home victory looks a decent correct score prediction, particularly after Samp ended last season with back-to-back home wins.
