A true relegation six-pointer

Saturday’s primetime Bundesliga TV pick sees rock-bottom Schalke welcome fellow strugglers Stuttgart in what could be a pivotal clash come the end of the season. Schalke are yet to win in 2023 but a run of four goalless draws points to a much improved backline and a willingness to fight for their survival.

In fact, a run of four straight goalless draws is a new record set by Schalke, so you’d expect this one to throw up a long-awaited goal. Schalke can reel Stuttgart in to within three points of them with a victory, although the hosts are still priced up as outsiders to do so despite what’s at stake here.

Whatever happens, defeat isn’t an option for Schalke here, although Stuttgart travel with confidence after recording a dominant 3-0 win over Cologne in the last round. Next on the agenda for Stuttgart is to improve on their rotten away league record (D4, L6) which in itself raises questions around how strong the favourites are in terms of value.

Stuttgart will fancy their chances but having failed to win each of their last six visits here, they know this will not be an easy task, even against a side propping up the rest of the division.
