Reason For Sevilla vs Espanyol Predictions

  • Both teams have registered in four of Sevilla’s last five La Liga matches and in three of their last four outings at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
  • Similarly, both teams have scored in all but one of Espanyol’s last five league fixtures and in three of their last five matches on the road.
  • Sevilla have won just one of their last five La Liga games (W1, D2 and L2) and just one of their last four at home (W1, D2 and L1).
  • Meanwhile, Espanyol have lost just one of their last five La Liga matches (W2, D2 and L1).

Sevilla stuttering after just one win in five

Sevilla looked like winning through an end to end contest against Celta Vigo at Balaidos last weekend following Youssef El-Nesyri’s strike midway through the first half, but Los Palanganas came unstuck in the final 15 minutes as goals from Iago Aspas and Pione Sisto completed a dramatic turnaround for struggling Celestes.

After a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid and 1-1 home draws against Athletic Club and Alaves, a 2-0 win over Granada at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Matchday 21 remains Sevilla’s only success of 2020 to date, and they have now been edged out of the top four on goal difference as a result of their stuttering form.

With just four points separating fourth placed Atletico Madrid and eighth placed Villarreal, Sevilla are seemingly locked in a five way battle for a Champions League berth with 15 games of the La Liga campaign remaining, and this Sunday’s clash at home to bottom side Espanyol rates as a must win affair, considering that Los Palanganas face an unenviable trip to high flying Getafe next week.

De Tomas fires again for improving Espanyol

Espanyol were in danger of being cut adrift just a few weeks ago, but the Barcelona based club have now hauled themselves to within two points of safety after last weekend’s crucial 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Mallorca at RCDE Stadium.

Raul De Tomas struck for the fourth time in as many games since his move from Benfica to bank Periquitos their first home success of the season, and Abelardo’s men have managed to accrue eight points from five league games in 2020 thus far, losing only to Granada (2-1) at Los Carmenes two starts ago.

Abelardo was brought in to save Espanyol from the drop and the 49 year-old is making giant strides towards achieving that goal, while Raul De Tomas offers the serious goal threat which was so desperately lacking throughout the first half of the season.

Espanyol have lost five of their last six away matches and their last four La Liga meetings against Sevilla, but they did manage to beat in form Villarreal 1-2 on the road last month and will be confident of getting something in Andalusia this weekend based on their recent improvement and the host’s sticky start to the calendar year.

BTTS the standout bet in Seville

This Sunday’s clash in Seville should be a lot closer than the bookmakers anticipate, with Los Palanganas poor value for the three points at around 1/2.

Sevilla’s home matches this season have generally been low scoring affairs with fewer than 2.5 goals scored in all but two of their 11 games at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, however we think there will be goals at both ends of the pitch in Andalusia this weekend.

Both teams have registered in all but one of Sevilla’s last five La Liga games and in three of their last four at home, with the same applying to all but one of Espanyol’s last five matches and in three of their last five outings on the road.

So ‘BTTS’ makes huge appeal at around evens, while we’re also predicting a 1-1 correct score. We feel the value call is to oppose Sevilla here based on their lack of recent wins, and the fact that Espanyol seem firmly on the upgrade. Abelardo’s side can earn a precious point in Andalusia to boost their survival hopes.
