Sheffield United vs Luton Predictions
- Sheffield United have taken four points from their last three league games
- All four of Sheffield United’s league games under Chris Wilder have seen under 2.5 goals
- Luton have lost six of their eight away league games this season
Blades can edge past relegation rivals
Relegation rivals Sheffield United and Luton could both do with claiming maximum points from this Boxing Day battle and the rock-bottom Blades may give their supporters some much-needed Christmas cheer.
Sheffield United are rooted to the foot of the Premier League table with only nine points to show from their 18 games, which is three fewer than Luton have managed from one outing less.
However, Chris Wilder’s re-appointment as Blades boss has already sparked an upturn in form, with his team taking four points from as many matches.
Wilder’s opening game in the dugout saw his charges lose 2-0 to Liverpool but three days on and they were able to grind out a 1-0 victory at home to Brentford.
Sheffield United suffered another 2-0 loss away at Chelsea on the back of beating the Bees, but their latest 1-1 draw at a red-hot Aston Villa has given them renewed hope in their scrap for survival.
Wilder’s return is having a positive impact
If avoiding the drop is to be a realistic ambition for Sheffield United then this a must-win match and they will be buoyed by the fact that Luton have lost six of their eight away league games.
For all their struggles, home performances haven’t been too shabby for the Blades, who have not only defeated Wolves and Brentford and drawn 2-2 with Everton, but have also pushed Manchester City and Manchester United close in 2-1 defeats.
So, roared on by the Bramall Lane faithful, Wilder’s men could claim Luton’s scalp.
The Hatters have excelled at home, where Andros Townsend’s first-half strike rewarded them with a deserved 1-0 success against Newcastle on Saturday.
Hatters not so happy away from home
But they’ve lost their last three away games at Aston Villa, Manchester United and Brentford, having drawn 2-2 at Nottingham Forest prior to that.
A tight, compact Kenilworth Road is where Luton is seen to best effect and Wilder may have a plan up his sleeve this Boxing Day.
It’s unlikely to be a free-flowing encounter given all four of Sheffield United’s matches under Wilder have seen two or fewer goals and the scrappier the better for his side.
Correct-score punters should, therefore, opt for a hard-fought 1-0 home win with goals surely going to be hard to come by.
