Reason For Sheffield Wednesday vs West Bromwich Albion Predictions

  • West Brom are winless in four league games, failing to score on each occasion
  • Sheffield Wednesday have lost only six of their 19 home games this term, sharing the spoils six times
  • One or both teams have failed to score in each of West Brom’s last six Championship clashes

The Owls are tough to topple

Given the number of injuries Sheffield Wednesday have had to deal with to key players this season, manager Garry Monk must be delighted to be on the brink of a top-half finish.

The Owls had won just two of their 12 league games this year prior to the season’s resumption but have returned considerably stronger, collecting four points from their opening two assignments against playoff-chasing pair Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Wednesday have come back from the enforced layoff with a fresh attitude and mentality and there’s no reason to think the resurgence won’t continue against title seekers West Brom.

The Owls are well-organised under Monk and their form from early on in the season shows what they are capable of. Wednesday recorded a home victory over Brentford, as well as holding Leeds and Fulham to a draw.

Fernando Forestieri, Morgan Fox, Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall and Sam Hutchinson all rejected offers to stay at Wednesday for the remainder of the season but only defender Fox played any part in their victory at Bristol City, so it’s unlikely to hinder their performance here.

Below-par Baggies set for more dropped points

West Brom are faltering in their pursuit of Championship promotion and we are predicting more dropped points for them on their trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Baggies are now winless in four, failing to score on each occasion, and a lack of confidence in the final third has handed Leeds the initiative in the title race.

Manager Slaven Bilic has so much attacking quality at his disposal – Charlie Austin, Matheus Pereria, Matt Phillips, Kenneth Zohore and Grady Diangana to name just five – but they have fired blanks in consecutive games against Wigan, Swansea, Birmingham and Brentford.

Despite creating 20 chances in their goalless draw at home to Birmingham on their Championship return, the Baggies had just two shots on target, while they forced only two saves from David Raya in a 1-0 loss at Brentford on Friday.

Things may soon click for Bilic’s boys but they are under considerable pressure and this is no easier than their recent assignments given the way Wednesday have resumed their season.

Low-scoring encounter looks likely

One or both teams have failed to score in each of West Brom’s last six Championship clashes and we are predicting another low-scoring encounter on their trip to Hillsborough.

There have been only 39 goals scored in Wednesday’s 19 home games, an average of 2.05 per match, with only seven of those contests rewarding both teams to score backers.

Three of the last four meetings between the pair have ended as draws, two of which were 1-1. Wednesday shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in their last home game and our prediction is a repeat result.
