Southampton vs Chelsea Predictions
- Chelsea beat Leicester 2-1 on Saturday despite playing for over an hour with 10 men.
- Chelsea beat Southampton in both league meetings last season, winning 6-0 at this venue in April.
- Raheem Sterling scored twice against Leicester.
Chelsea looking to continue Saints dominance
Southampton entertain Chelsea on Tuesday and Thomas Tuchel’s men should head into the game in confident mood after seeing off Leicester over the weekend.
Chelsea were reduced to 10-man after just 28 minutes against the Foxes as Conor Gallagher was dismissed in the first half but they still managed to rally and secure a 2-1 victory, thanks to a Raheem Sterling double.
The Blues thrashed Southampton 6-0 when they last visited St Mary’s in April and they should be able to come away with all three points on Tuesday, although it may not be quite as comfortable a win.
Saints yet to get going
Southampton have four points from as many games so far this season but have struggled against top quality opposition, losing 4-1 to Spurs and then 1-0 at home to Manchester United over the weekend.
Saints did put in a decent display against United, but Chelsea beat Southampton in both league meetings last season with an aggregate score of 9-1 and also dumped them out of the FA Cup on penalties.
The fact Chelsea managed to beat Leicester with 10 men suggests they have bounced back from a chastening 3-0 defeat at Leeds.
Expect goals on the south coast
Chelsea have only managed one clean sheet this season and have conceded six goals in four league games. The visitors are also without N’Golo Kante, a key man in their defensive play, and as Southampton have only failed to score in one of their games the hosts may be able to get on the scoresheet.
Indeed, Saints were perhaps unlucky not to get a goal and a share of the spoils against Manchester United, and as Chelsea scored nine goals against Saints last term a 3-1 win for Chelsea has some appeal in the correct score market.
Sterling opened his account with a double against Leicester and will be looking to kick on after his first goals for his new club. The England international looks to have settled in well at Stamford Bridge and appeals as an anytime goalscorer option.
