Gijon can bridge gap in thriller

Sporting Gijon have scored in 16 of their last 18 La Liga 2 games and over 2.5 goals is the bet when they host Racing Santander at El Molinon on Sunday.

Racing Santander are second in the table, 14 places and seven points above Sporting Gijon, with five wins, one draw and two defeats. The hosts have won three and lost five of their eight games this season.

Sporting Gijon are struggling, having lost their last five La Liga 2 matches, and while Racing Santander’s recent results have been a mixed bag, with three wins, one draw and two defeats in their last six outings, they are unbeaten in six meetings with Sporting Gijon.

Racing Santander beat Malaga 3-0 last weekend to keep up their run of games with over 2.5 goals. They left their scoring until the second half – 81% of their goals this season have been scored after the break.

There are usually goals in Racing Santander’s games. Fourteen of their last 17 La Liga 2 matches have gone over 2.5 goals, and their last five away games have all produced three goals or more.

The hosts have looked vulnerable at the back. Sporting Gijon have failed to keep a clean sheet in 13 of their last 16 home games in La Liga 2. They have conceded 14 goals this season – an average of 1.75 per game from eight games.

Both teams have been in goalscoring form. Sporting Gijon have scored in 16 of their last 18 league games, while no team has scored more than Racing Santander’s 21 goals in eight games this season. They have also scored at least twice in all three of their away games.

There should be goals at both ends in this one, with 2-2 appealing as a correct-score pick. Both teams have scored in Sporting Gijon’s last four La Liga 2 games and there is no reason to expect that to change here.
