Sporting Kansas City vs Whitecaps Predictions
Sporting Kansas City are finally recovering after their dreadful run of form early on in the season. They opened the campaign with three straight victories as they looked to improve on their 6th place finish last year, but they quickly slumped into a spell of awful form where they won one, drew two, and lost six in a run of nine games.
They are still looking a fairly inconsistent side, but they are at least picking up points on a regular basis. They have won four, drawn two, and lost three of their last nine outings in all competitions, including a midweek draw at Central in the CONCACAF Champions League. Coincidentally they have been drawn in the same group as Whitecaps in this competition and will face them again in the middle of September as they both look to progress.
This run of form has taken Sporting Kansas City to 5th in the MLS Western Conference table, and they hold a fairly comfortable four point cushion over 7th placed San Jose Earthquakes and a three point lead over Portland Timbers in 6th. However, Portland Timbers have a game in hand and San Jose Earthquakes have three in hand, so they’re in a very precarious position.
Whitecaps enjoyed a very successful season last term as they finished 2nd in the Western Conference, but they’re struggling a lot this term. They have won just one of their last seven in all competitions and are winless in five in the MLS. Each of their last three outings in the league has ended in defeat, and their general lack of form has left them outside the playoff zone.
Their 30 point total from their 25 games puts them two points outside the playoff spots, but San Jose Earthquakes sit between them and Portland Timbers and have two games in hand, so they need to start picking up points a lot more frequently.
Away from home Whitecaps are really finding it difficult to pick up points though. They have lost seven of their last ten on the road in the MLS, and they’re coming up against a side who have won five on the bounce on home turf this weekend. This includes victories over both New York City and FC Dallas, who top the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively.
My prediction is for them to get another win on Sunday morning, and odds of 8/11 for this outcome look an attractive backing. I’m going for a 2-0 correct score prediction at 15/2 as well due to Whitecaps struggling to find the net away from home.
