Reason For St Etienne vs PSG Predictions

  • PSG have won six of their last seven games, with 17 goals scored along the way.
  • PSG have conceded in five of their last six away games, though, while Saint-Étienne have scored nine times in their seven home matches under new coach Claude Puel.
  • The last two clashes between these teams in Saint-Étienne have ended 1-1 and 1-0 to PSG so we expect a tight match.

PSG on a roll but far from perfect

PSG kept up their dominant form on Wednesday as they stormed to a 5-0 victory over Galatasaray. Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, Pablo Sarabia and Edinson Cavani were all on the scoresheet as they strolled to the win and they’ll be hoping to recreate that type of performance here. The numbers improve every week for PSG as they have now scored 16 goals in their last six games, conceding four in the process, two of which came away to Madrid.

The Parisians have won six of their last seven games in all competitions and comfortably go into gameweek 18 with a five-point gap over Marseille and a game in hand. The only blemish for PSG in the last few weeks has been their away form, which has been ever so slightly below par for the champions.

They’ve still won eight of their last 10 away games but they have just one clean sheet in their last six and have had some tetchy moments, like their 2-1 defeat in Dijon and their win in Montpellier last week; they were trailing 1-0 up until the last 15 minutes. This will be something manager Thomas Tuchel will be desperate to rectify as they travel to Saint-Étienne.

Sainté’s home form to pose problems

PSG’s opponents for this one are in dire need of a win to lift spirits at the moment, as the bounce they got from Claude Puel’s arrival has begun to dwindle. Les Verts have just one win in their last six games in all competitions, with three defeats in their last four outings.

They’ve conceded seven goals in these four games and the defence could be preparing for another schooling here as Ligue 1’s highest-scoring team come to town. Saint-Étienne’s home form could give the fans a sliver of hope but it isn’t incredible and the team will still need to put in their best performance of the season if they want to take points off the champions.

Les Verts are unbeaten in their seven matches at the Geoffrey Guichard under Puel but, with four of these being draws, there is still a lot of work to be done. They do have three clean sheets in their last four home games, though, and this should be a somewhat difficult obstacle for PSG to deal with.

A close match in Saint-Étienne?

Paris have won four of their last five clashes with Saint-Étienne and we’re backing that to continue. But we doubt it’ll be the most dominant performance from the visitors. PSG have had some difficulty really blowing teams away on the road this season, scoring more than two goals in just two of their eight away games in the league so far.

Sainté have conceded more than one goal in just one of their seven home matches under Puel and as a result we’re expecting this match to be a tight one. The last two clashes between these sides in Saint-Étienne have finished 1-0 to PSG and 1-1, so there is history of this fixture being a close one.

As a result, we’re backing PSG to win but by a slim margin: 2-1. Paris have just one clean sheet in their last six away games and, with Saint-Étienne scoring four in their last home match against Nice, we can see both teams getting on the scoresheet here.
