Standard Liege vs Antwerp Predictions

Standard Liege have hit a sticky patch the last few weeks in the league. After draws to Mouscron and Genk they come into this fixture on the back of a 3-1 defeat to then bottom of the league Zulte Waragem. Antwerp on the other hand were starting to find their stride, with 3 consecutive league wins against Eupen, Lokeren and Waasland-Beveren respectively but were brought back down to earth with a bump as they lost 4-2 to table toppers Genk, despite being 2-0 ahead in the game.

Standard Liege are one of just 5 teams that are still unbeaten at home this season in the league. They started off with an impressive 3-2 win against Gent before drawing 0-0 against Cercle Brugge. A 3-2 win against Sint-Truiden and a 0-0 draw against Charleroi followed. The last 2 home games however have seen excellent results, firstly they defeated Club Brugge 3-1 and then come from behind to snatch a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against leaders Genk.

Antwerp are one of the best away sides in the division this season, they have picked up 13 points from their 6 away games with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Their wins have come against the weaker sides in the division with Charleroi, Mouscron, Eupen and Waasland-Beveren their victims. Their two games against decent opposition away from home saw a 1-1 draw at Anderlecht and 2-0 loss against Sint-Truiden.

Standard have scored 10 goals in their 6 home games this season, averaging 1.67 goals per game. They have conceded 6 goals at a rate of 1 per game. They have scored and conceded in 4/6 games with the exceptions being two 0-0 draws.

Antwerp have scored just 6 goals in their 6 away games this season, averaging a goal a game on the road. Defensively they have conceded just 4 goals at a rate of 0.67 per game. In total their away games have seen 10 goals, the lowest in the league by some distance with the next lowest being Kortrijk (14, scored 8 conceded 6)

Antwerp have struggled against the better sides in the division away from home and with Standard Liege’s two good results against Club Brugge and Genk we think it’s worth backing them to win here. We are not expecting a lot of goals in this one, but feel the home side are good enough to score a couple here. Therefore we’re opting for Standard Liege to win 2-0 on the correct score market.
