Switzerland vs Belgium Predictions
This is the first of three warm-up friendlies for Belgium ahead of Euro 2016 and probably the toughest with home games against Norway and Finland following this one. They’ve only played one match so far in 2016 and that was a 2-1 defeat to Portugal, only their second defeat since their Quarter Final exit at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They are expected to go well in France too and have a very strong squad to call on so even if they rotate their side in these friendlies they will still be sending out a very good side.
The general make-up of their squad is very attacking with no fewer than 8 players who could be classed as forwards or at the very least very attack-minded forwards so they are likely to be a bit bolder than they were two years ago when they were accused of being a bit cautious and they certainly have more than enough talent to really cause the Swiss problems in this game.
Switzerland have struggled a bit since qualifying in 2nd place to England in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, losing 3 of their 4 friendlies since. They’ve lost both matches so far in 2016, going down against Republic of Ireland and Bosnia but did beat a strong Austrian side in November away from home. They’ve named a large squad for these friendlies which includes 3 uncapped players but like Belgium they have plenty of talent in the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Arsenal newboy Granit Xhaka.
Both sides will be keen for a good performance and result here given Belgium’s lack of match practice following the postponement of some of their recent friendlies and Switzerland’s general poor form. Both teams have scored in all of Belgium’s last four games but they have a bit more all-round quality than the Swiss particularly from the bench which could see them shade this so consider backing Belgium to win 2-1 at 17/2.
