Uganda were able to get their Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a fine start, claiming a 2-0 victory over DR Congo in the opening weekend. With as many as three sides potentially going through from this group, that’s left the Ugandans in a strong position ahead of this midweek clash with Zimbabwe. They come into the game as favourites, while they know another victory would see them ease into the next round with a round to spare. Can Uganda get themselves into the last 16?

It would be Uganda’s first game past the group stage in the Africa Cup of Nations since 1978 were they to win this clash. Uganda were runners-up in Ghana that year, but they weren’t able to return until 2017 when they left the competition at the group stage. With a win to their name Uganda have already outstripped their display in 2017, but can they kick on from here and record back to back victories in Egypt?

Zimbabwe kicked off their campaign in the tournament’s opening game – where they lost 1-0 to Egypt. That defeat has left them on the back foot, especially with an encounter with a wounded DR Congo side to come. That has put Zimbabwe in a tough position, as they are now chasing a result in this clash to stay in contention for a place in the next round.

Zimbabwe have failed to win their last three games, while their qualifying campaign for this tournament was far from stellar. They claimed only two victories from their final five games, losing 1-0 at Liberia in November. Meanwhile, Uganda had their place at the tournament wrapped up with a game to spare after winning four of their first five matches.
