Uruguay vs Colombia Predictions

  • Uruguay have lost just one of their five qualifiers in Montevideo thus far (W3, D1).
  • Colombia have lost just one from five on their travels in the current campaign, with three of those games ending all square.
  • The sides fought out a goalless stalemate in this summer’s Copa America before Colombia advanced to the semi-finals on penalties.

Copa America repeat on the cards

A penalty shoot-out was needed to split these sides after a goalless stalemate in the Copa America quarter-finals earlier this year, and we envisage another closely fought encounter when the teams lock horns in Montevideo this Friday.

Uruguay have lost just one of their five qualifiers at Estadio Gran Parque Central (W3, D1) and are understandably favourites for this clash with home advantage, while they also beat Colombia 3-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign.

Oscar Tabarez’ men really ran over Tricolor in Barranquilla that night, though the Colombians look a far more solid outfit now as opposed to 12 months ago.

They’ve recovered from a poor start to qualifying by going unbeaten in their last five (W2, D3) and sit just two points behind the Uruguayans in fifth going into this tie. Reinaldo Rueda’s charges have also lost just one from five on their travels in the current campaign, so they’ll be hopefully of ending a run of four straight defeats from their previous qualifying trips to Montevideo.

It’s difficult to get away from the sides’ Copa America meeting when assessing this fixture, as it really was a grind for 120 minutes with both teams cancelling each other out.

Uruguay will naturally be seeking to avenge their penalties exit from the competition this Friday, but we think the steadily improving Colombians can do enough to earn a draw, which won’t exactly be the worst result in the world for both nations as they look to stay in contention for the top four and automatic qualification for the finals in Qatar.
