USA vs El Salvador Predictions

Stars and Stripes a cut above

El Salvador and the USA played out a 1-1 draw in the Concacaf Nations League in San Salvador in June, but it could be one-way traffic when they renew their rivalry in Florida.

Fresh from a 7-1 hiding of Granada on Saturday, the USA should be confident of inflicting another defeat on El Salvador, who have lost three friendlies on the spin since that draw at home to the Americans.

El Salvador lost 4-1 at home to Peru in September, were beaten 1-0 at Nicaragua in November and then lost 1-0 when entertaining Honduras last Thursday.

The Stars and Stripes showed their capabilities when making the last 16 of last year’s World Cup, having held England and Wales to draws and defeated Iran in the group phase of the competition.

Interestingly, these two teams have met competitively three times in the last 18 months. Both encounters in El Salvador finished level – 1-1 and 0-0 – while the USA were 1-0 winners in Ohio in January of last year.

So while the added quality of Gregg Berhalter’s team ought to tell, perhaps the visitor can make them work hard for their rewards.

There have been three or fewer goals in eight of USA’s last ten matches and El Salvador, who have conceded more than twice in only two of their last 22 internationals, may settle for a low-scoring defeat.
