Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Predictions
- Wellington Phoenix have now won four of their last five games and are currently third.
- Melbourne Victory have just one win in their last five and are ninth in the table.
- Wellington have scored 30 times this season, conceding 23 goals.
- Melbourne Victory have found the net 24 times but conceded 32 goals.
Finals Series football beckons for Wellington
Wellington Phoenix have certainly been the surprise package of the 2019/20 season in Australian football. They are currently third in the league but know a win here could see them rise to second in their pursuit of Finals Series football. They have won three in a row and look full of confidence as the end of the season draws near.
Wellington have scored an average of 1.57 goals per game this season, with their attacking trio of Ulises Davila, Gary Hooper and David Ball scoring 20 between them in 19 games. The attacking output of the side has been vital but their defensive record has been good too, conceding 23 times in 19 games as they continue to perform above most expectations.
Light at the end of the tunnel in disappointing season
Melbourne Victory have had a thoroughly disappointing campaign and find themselves in ninth place with just five wins so far. They still have a chance of making the finals series, though, with just seven points keeping them from the top six. They will need to start picking up wins very soon, however, and things aren’t looking good for the side.
Victory have scored just 24 goals this term, as they continue to struggle in front of goal despite the wealth of talent available to them. The team have also performed badly at the other end of the pitch, conceding 32 times with an average of 1.6 goals conceded per game over the course of the season.
More frustration for Melbourne Victory
Melbourne Victory may be forced to endure yet more frustration this weekend as they come up against a Wellington Phoenix side in sparkling form. Phoenix still seem to be a little underrated in the market and are hovering at just above evens to win this game, something that represents great value, and we’re backing them to win this game.
While Wellington should take all three points from this game, we don’t think it will be an easy ride for the hosts, with Melbourne still fighting for their lives in the race for a top-six spot. Ultimately, Wellington should be too strong for a Melbourne side that look weak mentally and we’re predicting a 2-1 win for Wellington.
