Western United vs Adelaide United Predictions

  • Western United have improved on last season’s shocking home record, but struggled to overcome bottom club Brisbane Roar last time out.
  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in all four of Western United’s league games this term.
  • Adelaide United have drawn three of their four A-League games this season.
  • The last two head-t0-head meetings between these clubs have finished 0-0.

Don’t hang your hat on goals here

Not so long ago, you could hang your hat on goals whenever Western United met Adelaide United, but the drought that has seen this A-League matchup finish 0-0 the last two times could continue on Friday.

John Aloisi’s side earned a 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar last weekend to briefly go top of the early-season standings, but looked short on ideas and potency yet again. Western may have accrued nine points from three straight 1-0 league victories but one of them have been convincing.

They were fortunate that their winner against Perth Glory was not chalked off for the ball going out of play in the build-up while Melbourne City hit the woodwork and saw several good chances go begging when they couldn’t equalise in the next game.

Reds have pace to play on the counter

Adelaide United lost their first game of the season last week when beaten at home by interstate rivals Melbourne Victory. It was a deserved result, but the Reds have looked better on the road in their early-season run outs and have the pace on the counter-attack to give the hosts a few problems here.

Last season’s home form shamed Western United as the nomadic Melburnians lost eight in a row through May and June, conceding 24 and scoring just three. Aloisi was brought in to change all that, and he has so far, but we cannot escape the feeling that they still don’t look that good in attack.

An Under 2.5 goals pick looks good at the price, especially given all four of the hosts’ A-League games have fallen that way and both of the Reds’ away trips too. We’re adding the draw aspect to bolster the potential rewards further because of the home side’s unconvincing attack and Adelaide’s ability to frustrate. The last two head-to-head meetings have finished goalless and that’s our idea of a value pick for the full-time score here.
