      Wolfsburg vs Stuttgart Predictions

VfB Stuttgart have slipped into probable irreparable danger after their 3-1 defeat at home to Mainz last Saturday, which, after their crucial 6-2 defeat in the relegation “six pointer” away to Werder Bremen, was their sixth defeat in seven matches (D1 L6). Stuttgart have, in fairness, had a difficult set of fixtures, facing off against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen over their last seven but their performances have been, nonetheless, underwhelming. No team is in worse league form than VfB Stuttgart, who can, at best, finish in the relegation play-off position. For this to happen Stuttgart must win against Wolfsburg while Frankfurt win against Werder Bremen.

Last year’s runners up, Wolfsburg, have had a truly disappointing season. They stand on 42 points and in eight place after their 1-0 win away to Hamburg last Saturday. Wolfsburg have no chance to qualify for European football again next year and have seemingly lost their momentum and motivation after their disappointing knock out from the Champions League against Real Madrid – last Saturday’s win ended a run of four back-to-back defeats across all competitions – the first time ever under coach Dieter Hecking.

With both teams looking relatively out-of-form it’s difficult to really call either a huge “favourite”, Stuttgart have survival to fight for while Wolfsburg play for just pride. However, Stuttgart’s tactically aggressive style of football has resulted in regularly defensive errors that have been costing them dearly over recent weeks. Wolfsburg, though having had a remarkably average overall season, have a very decent home record (W8 D5 L3) and have won or drawn in 81% of home matches this season. Meanwhile, Stuttgart’s form on the road this season hasn’t been particularly impressive (W3 D5 L8) and, as such, has seen them slowly slip down the table into the relegation battle under pressure, particularly in the closing weeks of the season. Combining the above trends with the statistics below, we expect that Stuttgart’s recklessly aggressive style under relegation pressure will result in both teams scoring in this match, however, we expect Wolfsburg’s home form to also be too much for struggling Stuttgart. Hence, Wolfsburg or draw and both teams to score at 1/1 seems the safe bet, while a 1-1 draw at 15/2 – Wolfburg’s most common home result (31% of all matches) – seems to be the best value correct score bet.
