Survival is the name of the game

The relegation dogfight took an interesting turn as Augsburg produced a 3-0 win over Wolfsburg last time out, a result which was something of a shock given the circumstances.

A coronavirus outbreak saw this game postponed initially, but nothing has changed as far as Augsburg are concerned, it is a must win game in the survival run-in, whereas their visitors look comfortable in mid-table.

Augsburg boss Markus Weinzierl hasn’t got the best personal record against Mainz (W3, D2, L7) though what he does have is momentum. The hosts have won more games across their last three as they did in nine games prior, thus inspiring confidence in their survival push.

While Mainz’s top-flight status is essentially secured, they are playing for nothing but a top-half finish in the run-in. The visitors did manage to draw from behind against Gladbach last time out, though that only served to extend their winless away run to nine games.
