South American giants look to bounce back

Brazil and Argentina both fell to shock defeats last time out and both will be looking to bounce back against their arch rivals as the two heavyweights of South American football meet in Superclasico de las Americas on Tuesday night.

The Selecao led for over 70 minutes in Colombia before being stunned by a late Luis Diaz brace and, with that loss making it three games without a win, they are in desperate need of a reaction against their old enemies after picking up just seven points from their opening five qualifiers.

Three points may be difficult to come by, though, despite Argentina suffering a loss at home to Uruguay. Prior to that, La Albiceleste had won all eight games since their World Cup final triumph in December and Uruguay’s 41st-minute opener ended a run of eight-successive clean sheets.

Goals at a premium in Rio

Despite the array of attacking talents on offer on both sides of this derby, the Superclasico de las Americas has been a tight affair in recent years. Just two goals have been scored in the last three meetings and at least one team has kept a clean sheet in each of the last seven meetings.

With Argentina not seeing both teams score since the World Cup final in Qatar and Brazil only scoring three goals in their last four games, backing both teams to score – no looks a good value option and Argentina could claim a narrow victory to consolidate top spot in the World Cup qualifying group.

Argentina have won two of their last three meetings with Brazil by a 1-0 scoreline and have played out eight wins to nil in their last nine matches.
