Burton Albion vs Doncaster Predictions

Despite having a squad that ought to be capable of competing in this division, Burton have made a displeasing start to the new campaign. After two losses on the bounce, Nigel Clough’s men will be hoping to pick up their first points of the season when they welcome Doncaster to Pirelli Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

On paper, it’s been a very poor start to the season for Burton, who ended last season by being relegated from the Championship, though they’ve not exactly had the rub of the green. Against Rochdale on the opening day, they were undone by two fantastic bits of play, while they did enough offensively to score more than the one goal that they did manage. What’s more, while they didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory against an attacking Gillingham team on match-day two, Nigel Clough’s men were certainly in the game.

Going forward, Burton, who were perhaps expected to adopt a less than cavalier approach in an attempt to bounce straight back up, have offered a threat, and it appears as though they’ll score plenty of goals in time, or at least they’ve certainly got the quality to do so. However, they’ve looked very open at the back, just as they did in the Championship last season. Going forward, the Brewers can continue to cause teams problems, though unless they sharpen up at the back, it will be a surprise if they avoid conceding lots of goals.

Like Burton, Doncaster have looked strong offensively during the opening weeks. Grant McCann’s men were very threatening on the break away at Southend on match-day one, while they delivered a dominant attacking performance when playing on the front foot against Wycombe last weekend, scoring three goals in the process. That said, they too have looked somewhat open at the back. Wycombe were unable to take advantage at Keepmoat last weekend, but Burton should be able to on their own patch.

Having seen how their opponents have played over the opening weeks, both Burton and Doncaster should fancy themselves to score goals in this match. The hosts will likely make the running, and they have the quality to cause the visitors problems, though if Doncaster break anything like they did at Roots Hall on the opening day, then they’ll also offer a significant forward threat.

Interestingly, based on both the attacking and defensive performances of this pair over the first couple of weeks, it’s easy to feel that ‘Over 2.5 Goals’, which has landed in 100% of both Burton and Doncaster’s league matches this season, should be a good bit shorter than it currently is.
