Coventry vs Plymouth Argyle Predictions

Having improved on their opening day loss by drawing 0-0 away at Wimbledon last weekend, Coventry will be looking to come full circle by beating Plymouth at Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The season is only two matches old, though it’s probably already fair to say that things haven’t exactly turned out the way that Coventry would’ve hoped. The Sky Blues opened their campaign with a home loss against Scunthorpe, while they could only manage a 0-0 draw away at Wimbledon last weekend. Wimbledon are no easy team to beat, especially on their own patch, so Mark Robins’ men may not be too disappointed with their effort at Kingsmeadow, though they probably will have wanted more after that poor opening.

In truth, Coventry haven’t performed overly poorly at the start of this season. Although they were by no means brilliant, nor did they really do enough to deserve to win the game, the result on the opening day didn’t exactly reflect their reasonable performance, while the Sky Blues did at least keep things tighter at the back on match-day two. That said, even at this early stage, it’s starting to look as though Robins’ men could struggle offensively. Their performances haven’t been completely devoid of attacking endeavour, though they’ve failed to create too many clear-cut opportunities and their end-product appears to be lacking too.

Plymouth, like Coventry, haven’t been amazingly strong going forward during the first two matches, though they’ve still managed to find the net in each of their games, and also conceded in both of those. Against Walsall, Derek Adams’ men looked quite open, while they weren’t exactly defensively secure against Southend last weekend. That said, they did do well to concede just once against an aggressive Southend side, who’ve taken ten more shots than any other team in the division this season.

Based on their first few performances of the season, it’s probably fair to say that neither have impressed massively going forward, though it is the hosts who’ve done that bit extra defensively. They didn’t really deserve to concede twice on the opening day, while they gave little away against Wimbledon last time out. If they can continue to defend well now back in front of their own fans, then the hosts could quite easily take advantage of a Plymouth team who’ve looked anything but secure at the back.

All things considered, it is the hosts who’re fancied to put their rear-guard to good use in this match. Backing Coventry to keep things tight before striking against a fairly open Plymouth team gets the nod.
