DC United vs Colorado Rapids Predictions

DC United and Colorado Rapids have both endured a poor time in the MLS and will not feature in the play-offs. The only thing either side has left to play for this season is pride, and there hasn’t been much of that on show in league games so far. DC United now have Wayne Rooney in their ranks, but the former England captain has only started once in three appearances since his move from Premier League side Everton. Rooney will go head to head with his former Manchester United teammate Tim Howard on Sunday and it will be interesting to see which player comes out on top in this particular battle.

When these two teams last met back in August 2017, then hosts Colorado Rapids were edged out by a single goal to nil. The unfortunate Jared Watts put the ball into the back of his own net in the twenty-seventh minute for what turned out to be the winning goal for DC United. The entire ninety minutes produced very few talking points and lacked quality from both teams, especially in the final third. However, Tim Howard was beaten once and that proved enough for DC United to claim all three points in a most forgettable match.

Neither side can claim to be in good form heading into their latest MLS encounter, but with two wins, two draws, and two defeats it’s Colorado Rapids who claim the title of form favourites. DC United have lost four of their last six, picking up one win and one draw, and now they could do with a stand out performance from their latest signing from across the pond this weekend. With Colorado winless in their last four games and the hosts losing their last two matches, we’ve put our money on this game ending in stalemate. Four of the last seven MLS games between these two sides have ended in a draw and the head to head record shows there has been very little between the two teams over the years.

With eight goals apiece in the league this season, Mattocks and Asad joint top score for DC United, but Rooney will add an extra attacking threat, as well as a creative one, if he starts the game. Badji leads the way in front of goals for the visitors this season with seven league goals, but has only scored twice in his last nine appearances in the MLS for Colorado.

We’re backing this game to end in a draw as their really isn’t enough evidence from either team that they have what it takes to go out and claim all three points for themselves this weekend. As for a final score, we’re backing both teams to get on the scoreboard in a 1-1 draw.

DC United’s Predicted Lineup: Ousted, Brillant, Mora, Birnbaum, Durkin, Stieber, Fisher, Acosta, Arriola, Mattocks/Rooney, Asad.

Colorado Rapids’ Predicted Lineup: Howard, Castillo, Smith, Wilson, Ford, Sjöberg, Blomberg, Price, Nicholson, Martinez, McBean.
