Falkirk vs Montrose Predictions

These two sides had very mixed fortunes in the League Cup last season, as Falkirk managed to finished top of their group, while Montrose finished second from bottom. The pair kick off their new season with a cup clash on Saturday, as the hosts welcome League One opposition to the Falkirk Community Stadium. Can they build up for another season in the Championship with a strong League Cup group campaign? Before the new league season kicks off, these two each have four cup matches as they look to progress in to the knockout round.

The hosts are out to build on a mixed preseason campaign, which finished up as they won 2-1 at Alloa in midweek. Next up for them is this meeting with Montrose, the side who won League Two last season to gain promotion to the third tier. There’s not too much between the pair in terms of the league pyramid, but will that also be the case on the pitch this weekend?

The hosts will expect to win this clash, after claiming a victory in four of their last five home matches. They finished the Championship campaign strongly, especially at home. Now they’re out to take that form in to the League Cup, where their record is also quite impressive. Falkirk have won five of their last six matches in this competition, which helped them progress from their group last season with a perfect record. It took extra time to send them out, as they went down to eventual Championship promotion winners Livingston.

Montrose finished last season’s  League Cup campaign with a win over Alloa, which ended a run of 10 straight defeats in this competition. Their League Cup record since the group stage was introduced in 2016 has been terrible, with four defeats from four first time out. In five of their last six games they’ve lost to nil, with an aggregate scoreline of 19-0 across those matches.

Falkirk’s last six games in this competition have seen them win five by a margin of two goals or more. They’ll be expecting to continue that form this weekend, given that the visitors lost by two or more in all of their league defeats last season in the fourth tier. A heavy loss seems likely here, so we’re backing Falkirk with a -1 handicap, as we see them winning this clash by at least two clear goals, given the form of both sides.
