Luton vs Shrewsbury Predictions

Despite playing reasonably well at times, Luton went into Tuesday’s fixture against Southend without a win, though after they got the better of the Shrimpers, the Hatters have got that monkey off their backs. With that first win under their belts, Nathan Jones’ men will be looking for three more points when they welcome Shrewsbury to Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

Luton finally got the result that they deserved on match-fay four, as they got the better of an underperforming Southend side. The Hatters were a tad fortunate to bump into Southend on an off day, though as they say, you can only beat what is in front of you, and Luton certainly did that. With that result acting as a platform from which to build, Nathan Jones’ men should fancy their chances of getting the better of a Shrewsbury side who’re without a win this season.

In terms of how they’ve performed since making the step up to League One from England’s fourth tier, Luton haven’t done too badly. They’ve been by no means one of the most impressive, but there are several other sides who’ve done far worse. Each of their first two matches saw them defend well, while they were good in that respect last time out. A lack of creativity in the final third was apparent during the early weeks, though it’s fair to say that the Hatters improved offensively last time out. All in all, a repeat of Tuesday’s performance would make them hard to beat here.

As things stand, Shrewsbury are one of four teams without a win, though that stat may be a little bit misleading. It’s fair to say that they’ve not been great, though the Shrews have probably done enough to earn at least once victory. Going forward, they’ve offered more than their results would have people believe, while they seemingly retain a lot of last season’s defensive strength.

Saturday’s visitors did draw 0-0 away at Doncaster during the week, though their performance was a pleasing one. John Askey’s men created more than their opponents, while they gave little away. If they can deliver a similar performance at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, then they could easily outplay their rather hefty price-tag.

In truth, despite what both the league table and pre-match odds suggest, Shrewsbury haven’t done much worse than Luton so far. In fact, going forward, the Shrews have offered a little bit more than Saturday’s hosts, as the fact that they sit 5th in the expected goals table points to.

Overall, based on what we’ve seen from them so far, the pair look relatively closely matched, which means that the visited simply must be backed at such generous odds. Luton are no mugs, but it’s very hard to agree with them being such odds-on favourites.
