Palmeiras vs Jorge Wilstermann Predictions

Palmeiras picked up a solid point last week in what looks like their trickiest game of the group. They drew 1-1 with Atletico Tucuman, one of Argentina’s strongest home sides. The result is even more impressive when you consider that they played with 10 men for 70 minutes.  Now, on home soil they will be expecting to pick up their first win of the competition.

Despite losing Gabirel Jesus and manager Cuca, the team is still looking very strong. Miguel Angel Borja, Michel Bastos and Felipe Melo have all came in, along with talented manager Eduardo Baptista. The side will come into the game on a real high, having dismantled rivals Sao Paulo 3-0 over the weekend. Palmeiras have played 9 competitive games in 2017, winning 6. On home soil they have a perfect record,  having won all 4 games contested.  Going back to last year, Palmeiras have now won 8 home games in a row.

Wilstemann got off to an even better start last week. They tore a disorganised Penarol side to shreds, picking up an early three points in a 6-2 win. It was a thoroughly deserved win, and one that has them dreaming of an unlikely progression. It’s still going to be an uphill battle, but if they can somehow manage to pick up something here then their chances will be all the more increased.

While the performance against Penarol may have been a good one, it’s not been matched in other games. The side have made a fairly poor start to their title defence, having taken just 8 points from 7 games.  One of those points game at the weekend, in a drab 0-0 draw away at Nacional Potosi.

This is a game Palmeiras should be winning, and clearly. The disparity in quality between the teams is vast, as is the gap between Brazilian and Bolivian football in general. The Wilstermann camp have been stating their intention of playing attacking football from the off here, but that seems like a dangerous game plan.

If they plan to go toe to toe with Palmeiras, they are likely to be blown away. The hosts possess one of the continents most deadly strikers in Borja, and have quality all over the pitch. We think the hosts will win, and win comfortably. Backing Palmeiras to win both halves looks a good bet.
