Sides set for first leg stalemate in Madrid

Both of these sides are in great nick going into the Spanish Segunda Play-Off Final and neither are expected to give much away in Sunday’s first leg at Estadio de Vallecas.

The onus will be on Rayo Vallecano to establish a lead in Madrid, and the hosts are favourites to do so at slight odds-against. Los Franjirrojos have won five of their last six including their victories over Leganes in the semis and they beat Girona 2-1 here in the regular season.

The visitors are much improved since the teams last met in April though and head into the final unbeaten in their last ten outings, winning eight. They were equally convincing in dispatching Almeria 3-0 on aggregate to reach the showpiece, while they’ve also lost just one of their last nine on their travels.

Five of those games have ended all square and that’s the outcome we foresee in Sunday’s first leg. This could easily go either way over the course of the next week, and our tentative selection is for a stalemate in the capital and a 1-1 correct score, which would be Girona’s eighth start in ten to produce under 2.5 goals.
