Romania vs Serbia Predictions

Romania have made an unbeaten start to their Nations League group after the opening set of fixtures. They drew their opening two games, 0-0 at home to Montenegro and 2-2 at Serbia before picking up their first win of the tournament with a 2-1 away victory at Lithuania. This was despite the Lithuanians equalising in the 89th minute as Mainz midfielder Alexandru Maxin popped up with a 90th minute winner, his 5th for his country.

Serbia are the group leaders at the half way stage and are the favourites to gain promotion to League B. They have won two and drawn one of their opening three games. They opened up with a 1-0 away win at Lithuania thanks to a Tadic penalty, then followed that up with a 2-2 draw at home to Romania thanks to a brace from Fulham striker Mitrovic. They made it 7 points from three games as they breezed past Montenegro 2-0 away from home with Mitrovic again in the headlines with another two goal haul.

Romania are very solid on home soil, they have lost just one of their last ten home games in all competitions, a 3-0 defeat to Netherlands. They have beaten some decent sides in that run, two 3-2 wins vs Chile, 2-0 vs Turkey and 1-0 win vs Sweden being the highlights. They have also lost just two of their last 15 home competitive fixtures, proving they are tough to beat at Arena Naţională. Serbia will have their work cut out on Sunday.

Serbia enter this Nations League campaign on the back of a disappointing World Cup run, they were knocked out in the group stages with one win and two losses from their three games, resulting in a 3rd place finish in Group E. They have bounced back from that disappointment well, making a great start to their Nations League campaign. Mitrovic has been the catalyst for their good form, scoring 4 times in their opening 3 games, meaning the former Anderlecht striker has bagged 9 goals in 11 games for club and season this season.

Away from home Serbia have been very solid, winning 7 of their last 9 games, with just one loss, a 3-2 defeat at Austria in World Cup qualifying. They have lost just one of their last 9 competitive away games, proving they are a tough outfit to break down and with Mitrovic in the form of his life, it’s hard to keep them out too.

Both sides are solid outfits, and both have goals in them which was proven by the 2-2 draw between the sides in September and we see this being another goal laden affair so shall be backing both teams to score. Mitrovic is in great form for club and country and it’s hard to ignore him here at such a good price, so we’ll also have a small bet on him to score anytime. Neither side lose very often so the correct score prediction is tricky but we think Serbia will be happy with a draw as it keeps them top of the group and in control. Romania will feel they need to win here to have a chance of promotion and we feel they might get caught out pushing too many forward as the game wears on, so for that reason we are backing Serbia to win 2-1.
