San Jose Earthquakes vs Portland Timbers Predictions

It has been a tough start to the new season for SJ Earthquakes and their guests on Sunday Portland Timbers, with both teams failing to win any of their opening four matches. This weekend’s clash will be seen as both clubs as a perfect opportunity to get their season up and running with a victory.

SJ Earthquakes were hammered 5-0 at home by LAFC last timeout, as Mexican international striker Carlos Vela helped himself to the match ball as he completed his hat trick. Portland Timbers put in a decent performance away at LA Galaxy, but narrow lost the game thanks to two Ibrahimović penalties cancelled out Ebobisse’s forty-fourth minute strike.

The performances of both teams in the early stages of the season, especially defensively, and their recent head to head record, all points towards over 2.5 goals being scored on Sunday and the game ending in a draw. Three of the last six meetings between these two clubs have produced over 2.5 goals, while each of SJ Earthquakes’ last six and Portland Timbers’ last five matches have also seen over 2.5 goals scored. Both Portland Timbers and SJ Earthquakes are without a win in the MLS this season, and neither side have so far managed to keep a clean sheet. With both teams without a win, a draw appears to be the most likely result on Sunday; and with both teams conceding a lot of goals we’re sure at least three will be scored this weekend.

Eriksson and Espinoza are the only two players to have scored for SJ Earthquakes so far this season, while Ebobisse leads the way in front of goal for Portland Timbers with two goals to his name. We’re confident that over 2.5 goals will be scored on Sunday, and have backed a final scoreline of 2-2. Both teams are conceding a lot of goals in the early stages of the season, and their recent head to head record suggests we have a good chance of seeing at least three goals scored this weekend.
