Spain vs Romania Predictions

Spain have sailed through this Euro 2020 qualifying group, so do Romania have any chance of preventing them finishing with a victory? The pair meet on Monday night with their fates already sealed. The Spanish are heading for the draw at the end of this month, while Romania awaits March’s play-offs to see if they can join the 2012 winners at the tournament.

Another thing both sides have in common is they’re both hosting parts of Euro 2020. Getting to play home games at a tournament is a big boost, something which could help the Spanish following a dreadful campaign at Russia 2018. They haven’t impressed at a major tournament since they last won the Euros back in 2012. However, their brilliant record in qualifying does suggest there’s better to come this time around.

Romania are guaranteed a play-off spot, even though they dropped vital points in their last two games. A 2-0 loss at home to Sweden ended their hopes and saw the Swedes secure second. An unbeaten Nations League campaign means Romania are booked into the play-offs, however, where they will pose a serious threat to any side they face.

Romania are hoping to warm up for the play-offs with a shock win over Spain, but they’ll struggle to end the hosts’ unbeaten record so far. The only points dropped by Spain on their way to the Euros came in away trips in Scandinavia. At home, they have been perfect. Four wins from four in the qualifiers followed a victory over Bosnia in November last year. That perfect 12-month home record comes with plenty of goals, having hit 16 in four qualifiers.

Spain showed their lethal edge with seven against Malta in their game at the weekend, which they’ll be hoping to follow up on. Romania have only lost three times, each against the top two, and during each of those games they’ve conceded twice. However, the visitors have scored in all of their away qualifiers so far, finding the net in nine straight trips over a period of more than two years. Following that form, we expect plenty of goals here, although the Spanish look set to add to their great form.

We are backing a Spain victory with over 2.5 goals in the match, given the form of both sides. On top of that, we are tipping the Spanish to add another three goals to their tally in this clash. A 3-1 victory for the group leaders is our correct score prediction.
