Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Neither of these sides were particularly fluent in front of goal last season, with 10 of Valencia’s last 12 outings of 2021/22, alongside 11 of Girona’s final 14, containing fewer than three strikes. Valencia meanwhile kept half a dozen clean sheets in their final 13 league games

Valencia 2-0

Reason for tip

There are certainly questions over the strength of Girona’s side after a limited number of transfers following their promotion. Valencia meanwhile are under the new management of Gennaro Gattusu and lost just four of their final 16 La Liga home fixtures in 2021/22

Valencia vs Girona Predictions

  • Only two of Valencia’s last 12 games last season contained three or more goals
  • There were fewer than three strikes in 11 of Girona’s final 14 outings in 2021/22
  • Valencia kept six clean sheets in their last 13 outings of the previous campaign

Valencia must improve at home

The Mestalla has traditionally been a fortress for Valencia, but they struggled there in 2021/22, picking up just six wins and 26 points from 19 matches.

This will be a first game in charge for new manager Gennaro Gattuso, so there’s some uncertainty over how they will shape up, but six of his final nine matches as Napoli boss contained fewer than three goals.

That continues the trend Valencia had last season, with only two of their last dozen outings seeing in excess of two strikes.

Girona hoping to hit the ground running

It’s three years since Girona were last in Spain’s top flight, but they got promoted to La Liga over the summer and are looking to continue an impressive run of just five defeats from their final 18 matches.

Only a third of those games contained in excess of two goals, showing Míchel’s side were good at keeping things tight at the back, but rarely battered teams off the park.

Their transfers have been limited though, with David Lopez from Espanyol their only arrival so far, meaning there’s a lot of faith being put in the team who won the Segunda play-offs.

I predict that there will be fewer than three goals in this game, and I think Valencia might start with a win, with 2-0 my correct score prediction.
