The World Cup in November and December has caused carnage with the domestic football schedule and this week we are treated to the first of many midweek Premier League slates of 2023.

With nine fixtures set to be played between Tuesday and Thursday, I have rounded up some of the top options for those looking to back a card or two this week.

Tuesday, January 3rd

Anthony Gordon

Only Ruben Neves (7) has picked up more Premier League cards this season than Everton’s talented youngster Anthony Gordon (6), despite the fact the 21-year-old has only actually started 12 games.

Gordon has been booked seven times in all competitions, including in three of his last six starts, and comes up against a Brighton side with a penchant for getting their opponents in trouble. Only Spurs (39) and Everton (39) have seen their opponents booked more times than The Seagulls (38) this season.

Kieran Trippier

Arsenal and Newcastle will battle it out in an unlikely top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday and both sides are fairly adept at getting their opponents into trouble.

Arsenal have seen their opponents booked 32 times this season, slightly lower in the table than Newcastle’s 35, but it’s a Magpies defender I think could find his way into the referee’s book.

Kieran Trippier has been shown a yellow card four times in 17 outings this season but his more recent games have shown a more aggressive side, with three yellow cards in his last four appearances for his club.

Wednesday, January 4th

Ryan Yates

St Mary’s Stadium hosts what could be a crucial tie in the forthcoming relegation battle when Nottingham Forest come to town and it’s a Tricky Trees player I’m tipping to get into trouble on the south coast.

Ryan Yates has picked up four bookings in his 13 Premier League starts so far, with his most recent one against Chelsea on New Year’s Day making it three cards in his last four Premier League appearances.

Ruben Neves

Sitting top of the Premier League card charts is perennial booking magnet Ruben Neves and he could round off Wednesday with his eighth yellow card of the season.

Since arriving at Molineux in 2017/18, Neves has been booked 52 times in the league and two of those have come in his last three starts against Midlands rivals Aston Villa. He has been booked in four of his last five away games for Wolves and is the most likely man to get into trouble at Villa Park.

Cheick Oumar Doucoure

As previously mentioned, no team has seen their opponents get into more trouble than Tottenham this season, with Antonio Conte’s side seeing the other side pick up 39 yellow cards and one red card so far.

Unsurprisingly, it is a Crystal Palace player we are focusing on here. Cheick Doucoure has been booked five times so far this season and three of those came at Selhurst Park. He is one to watch on Wednesday.
