Atleti can continue extraordinary run in La Liga

Heading into 2023, Atletico Madrid looked at risk of missing out on a place in the top four in La Liga but an extraordinary run of form has fired the club up to third spot only a couple of points off rivals Real Madrid in second place.

Atleti have lost only one of their last 16 games in the Spanish top flight – and that defeat was against pacesetters Barcelona so was hardly a disgrace – and they have won eight of their last nine league fixtures.

On Sunday they cruised to a 5-2 win away to Real Valladolid, having led 3-0 before letting their opponents back into the game with the score at 3-2 but they showed decent psychological resolve to see out the game.

With Antoine Griezmann, Alvara Morata, Memphis Depay and Angel Correa in their ranks, they have plenty of attacking combinations to choose from and are now only six points away from guaranteeing a spot in the top four.

They can pick up half of those points against Cadiz, who are still in the mix for relegation in La Liga.

They at least picked up a 2-1 win over Valencia last time out but were winless in eight matches beforehand and should be opposed at the Wanda Metropolitano, where Cadiz could score a consolation.
