Augsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen Predictions

• Leverkusen are unbeaten in 16 league games, winning five of their seven away trips

Leverkusen can maintain their relentless pace

Bayer Leverkusen resume their Bundesliga season after the winter break at the top of the table, having won 13 and drawn three of their opening 16 games.

Bayern Munich started the weekend four points back with a game in hand but they are in action at home to Hoffenheim on Friday, so that deficit is expected to be cut.

That means the pressure will be on Xabi Alonso’s side to return with a victory and, while they should deliver the goods, Augsburg are no pushovers at the WWK Arena.

Leverkusen’s only dropped points away from home have come in draws at Bayern and Stuttgart, the two teams that are directly behind them in the Bundesliga table.

Augsburg are not of that ilk, however, as they sit 11th, 24 points behind Leverkusen in the standings.

To their credit, though, Augsburg have lost only one of their eight home league games this term, with their only setback coming in a 2-1 reverse against Darmstadt in October.

Augsburg good for a goal at home

Since then, Jess Thorup’s side have recorded wins over Wolfsburg and sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt as well as recording draws with Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim, who find themselves fifth and seventh respectively.

Both teams have scored in all eight of their home league games this season, with those matches yielding a total of 30 goals.

That gives them every hope of grabbing a consolation goal but Leverkusen, having scored at least twice in six of their seven away games, should come up with the answers.

Star striker Victor Boniface is out injured, having also withdrawn from Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad, but enough attacking talent remains in the recently returned Patrick Schick, Florian Wirtz and Jonas Hofmann.

So Bayer Leverkusen, who have conceded in four of their last six away games, can win in a match with both teams scoring, and correct-score punters can side with a 3-1 road victory.
